CHAPTER 15

Tessa glanced at the clock on her kitchen wall again. After Harry’s agility class, she had spent the rest of the morning making cream puffs as she ran through what she knew in an attempt to try and solve the murder. The cream puffs she had made the previous day had been ruined because she had been distracted by Mark and she hadn’t added enough eggs. She was waiting for Cassie to give her an update on what she’d found out at the diner.

But the time for her to complete her shift had already passed, and she hadn’t heard a word from her. She piped whipped cream into the cream puff in front of her and pursed her lips. Her instincts told her that something wasn’t right. She pulled her phone out of her pocket to call Cassie, then heard the goats race toward the front gate. She smiled to herself as she turned toward the door just in time to see Stephanie burst through it, with Billy chomping on one of the cuffs of the pants Stephanie wore.

“Stephanie, did you get a new job?” Tessa studied her clothes.

“Tessa!” Stephanie pointed at the goat eating her pants. “Do you think you could do something about this?”

“I’m not sure.” Tessa crossed her arms as she watched Cassie step into the house behind Stephanie. “Maybe you two should tell me what you’ve been up to first. Because I’m guessing that Mirabel doesn’t have a new uniform policy, and you were both supposed to be at work. And I don’t think you’ve started working as a courier.” She looked from Stephanie to Cassie. “Well?”

“Tessa!” Stephanie tried to tug her pants free of Billy’s jaws.

“Here, Billy. Here, look what I have.” Cassie waved a treat in front of him.

Billy’s eyes swung back and forth, following the treat, but his grip on Stephanie’s pants didn’t weaken.

“Unbelievable.” Stephanie growled with frustration as she shook her foot in an attempt to free herself from the goat.

Billy tugged harder.

“Bad idea!” Tessa slapped her hands sharply together creating a cracking sound that startled everyone in the room, including Billy.

Billy let go of Stephanie’s pants and bolted toward the door. He froze, then slunk back toward the treat in Cassie’s hand.

“That’s a good boy.” Cassie smiled as she gave him the treat.

“Good boy?” Stephanie looked at the shredded cuff of her pants. “I was going to return this costume.”

“I’m sorry, Stephanie. I’ll cover the cost.” Cassie shooed Billy out through the front door and closed the door behind him.

“Aha! I knew you were up to something!” Tessa stared at them both. “One of you should start talking.”

“Stephanie found out from a friend that there was a huge rift over a business deal between Charlie and his old manager, Anton Wheelers. And we thought it was important to try and see exactly what was going on between them,” Cassie said.

“And you didn’t tell me?” Tessa looked between them.

“You were busy at Harry’s class. We didn’t know if it would lead anywhere anyway.
